Filling out Job Applications
Application forms are really just resumes in
disguise. Some large employers, such as fast food restaurants, manufacturers,
and government agencies, prefer application forms over resumes. The forms suit
the style of large organizations because people find information more quickly
if it always appears in the same place.
Even if youre applying to a company that uses applications, its a good idea to have a resume. You can submit a resume even if an application is required; it will spotlight your qualifications, and show off your writing skills. And the information on the resume will serve as a handy reference if you must fill out an application form quickly.
One of the most important features of the application form, and the primary difference between it and the resume process, is your signature at the bottom of the form. Read the language above it carefully. By your signature, you are certifying that the information you put on the application is true. Later, if the company discovers you were untruthful about your history (especially your criminal history) it will be automatic grounds for immediate dismissal in most companies. Many applicants take for granted that theres room for "fuzziness" on a resume (not a good idea, either, by the way) but an application should contain only the verifiable facts.

Here are some general tips on completing application forms:
- Bring along your resume for quick reference to dates and company names.
- Bring along your address book for reference numbers and addresses.
- Read the whole form carefully before starting.
- Use your best and most careful handwriting, so its easy to read.
- Bring along an erasable pen you can erase mistakes, and after a while, the ink dries and becomes permanent.
- Leave no blanks; enter n/a (for "not applicable") when the information requested does not apply to you; this tells people checking the form that you did not simply skip the question.
- Be ready to fill the form out right there in the office. Many companies wont let you take the form with you to fill out at home. Dont take this personally. In some industries, basic reading and writing skills are essential, and many companies want to see that you dont need help in reading or writing the application.
